Vinyl records replaced an even earlier system of wax based cylinders which acted as both recording and playback units. In the mid 2000s gradually records made of any material began to be called vinyl records or simply vinyl. This year vinyl sales have outpaced cd sales in the united states for the first time since the 1980s. Vinyl is an analog storage medium which means there is a physical record of the music imprinted on the vinyl disc read by a sensitive needle called a stylus.

The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. The vinyldisc is a combination of a digital layer either in cd or dvd format and an analog layer which is a vinyl record developed by the german company optimal media production. Original sound is analog by definition. Before the advent of magnetic tape and digital cd technologies flat disks made from a petroleum based plastic called vinyl were the preferred media for popular music reproduction.

Disc makers was a pioneer in the custom vinyl business way back in 1940s and was synonymous with the highest quality record pressing for independent artists and labels in the 70s 80s and 90s. The standard vinyl album is the 12 inch 33 rpm lp 7 inch 33 rpm ep and 7 inch 45 rpm single.
