The door rides through a channel made by what are called split studs these studs function like regular wall studs but are metal wrapped and form a hollow channel in the middle for the pocket door to pass. I m using a pocket door kit from johnson hardware for a 36 door. Some of this will be attached to the door and some will be attached to the wall. Attach the split studs.

Most pocket door frame kits specify how big the header should be. If needed use a hand saw to cut the track that came with your pocket door hardware so that it s 1 8 inch shorter than the opening. You just have to frame the rough opening in your wall. All frames can be cut down to fit smaller size door.

Before you begin installing your pocket door read the directions for the pocket door kit you re installing to get an overview of the process and what s involved. Step 2 attach split studs to floor and header. Make sure the door is still sliding easily on the track and that the latches line up as needed. All pocket door systems are installed in basically the same way but the manufacturer s directions should give you the best advice for installing that particular product.
