Installing Plastic Sheeting Over Insulation

This article will show you how to add 6 mil plastic sheeting on the ground and insulate the walls in your crawlspace.

If water vapor diffuses or infiltrates into the wall cavity and finds the cool surface moisture problems can occur. Use the pattern described beforehand as to give strength to the insulation layer on one row install the sheets horizontally as on the next one lay them vertically. Picture an ice cold can of soda on a sweltering hot day. The cool surface is the sheathing assuming no exterior insulation.

Plastic on the outside. Soon water pours off the can. Go to the second wall and install the sheeting over the insulation just like the previous wall. Stretch the plastic sheet tightly across the top of the wall and staple it to the studs and plates.

Continue in the same manner until the bottom row is complete. Plastic on the outer surface of a wall in cold weather could cause problems. Cut the sheeting with scissors at the end of the wall. The colder the contents the more beads of sweat that form on the sides.

How to install poly over insulation. Move down the wall and staple the sheeting to the studs over the insulation until reaching the end of the wall. Install the plastic sheeting only after the insulation wiring and plumbing have been completed. We use foil faced rigid insulation to keep the space under the house dry.
