If you have ceiling beams run the panels perpendicular to beams for an interesting twist. Installing beadboard paneling over popcorn ceilings is a quick way to cover the popcorn. This time we decided that since i wanted a planked ceiling in the bedroom anyway we would just plank over the top of the popcorn instead of removing it first. Since you have textured popcorn ceilings the surface would be too uneven to just put paneling on top of it.

When we renovated the kitchen family room and dining room we scraped the popcorn off of the ceilings and it was such a mess. You could go to the trouble of removing all the texture first but a simpler method would be to put furring strips made from 1 3 or 1 4 boards on the ceiling then attach the paneling to them. This is important because many homes have popcorn ceilings that contain asbestos. Removing a popcorn ceiling is a messy time consuming job.

Fortunately covering it with beadboard allows you to do just that. I wish we had made that decision about three rooms. 1 prime both sides of each piece of beadboard paneling you. This is the old school option. Covering a popcorn ceiling with classic beadboard paneling can instantly transform the look of the entire room from dated to timeless. If the old ceiling is reliably flat you can install the paneling right over the old drywall.
