The fastest and most foolproof way to install fence posts for fence posts that are firmly set and straight all you need is a good technique a helpful friend and the right products.

The hinge post must be of suff cient size to support the weight of the gate.

For a solid fence line you will need to have wooden fence posts wherever there are corners and for bracing at the corners.
A 4 x 4 is not suff cient for a drive gate for example.
Posts are the correct length depth of hole plus gate height plus clearances under the gate i e.
2 make sure the gate is mounted high enough on the hinge post to keep the far end of the gate off the ground.
5 use strainer wire to balance the gate with the fence running on either side of the gate.

6ft high gate with 2 inches clearances and a hole 3ft deep would require a post length of 9ft 2 both the tanalised softwood posts and sawn green oak gate posts are sunk into the ground the same way.

We strongly suggest that the bracing between the hinge post and f rst line post for larger and heavier rail or driveway gates should be done as shown above.
So this was step one after redoing the fence itself to building a gate for our fence.
The gateposts that support a driveway gate must be sturdy enough to support the weight of the gate no matter what material is in the gate.
You can check this is enough by laying a spirit level on the ground where the gate will open and level the ground if you need to.
3 use dry concrete to set the posts.
Brace the gate hinge post to the f rst line post.
Use a spade or post hole borer to dig your post holes roughly a spade and a half wide and deep enough to leave a 50mm clearance gap beneath the gate so it can open freely.
